This mixed-media canvas tells the story of a swallow as a symbol of hope during the Anglo-Boer War. The artwork is built on layers of old printed text, echoing letters, memories, and voices from the past. Across this backdrop, dark branches rise like timelines of history, marked with small yellow buds that hint at new beginnings.

Three swallows, shaped from blue-and-white mosaic fragments, rest on the branches. In the context of the war, the swallow becomes a quiet messenger of endurance, return, and hope — a reminder that even in times of conflict, nature continues, and hope still finds a way to land.

A tiny white flower at the bottom adds a final touch of gentleness, reinforcing the theme of life and light surviving through difficult times. Displayed in a calm, minimalist setting, the artwork balances history with a soft, uplifting mood.

This canvas is a distinctive piece measuring 200mm by 200mm.

Crafted by Anne-Mart Vlok.
